Poison centres in the EU are estimated to answer 600,000 calls for support every year. They provide medical advice to general consumers and doctors on health emergencies arising from exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Regulation

The new Annex VIII to the EU CLP Regulation is concerned with the duties, requirements and mechanisms for EU Poison Centre Notifications, and the communication of UFIs. In practical terms, Annex VIII applies from 1 January 2021 with transitional dates. These new regulations place three general responsibilities on ‘submitters’ (Importers and Downstream Users) placing on the market mixtures, which are hazardous based on health or physical effects:
  • Allocation of a 16 digit Unique Formula Identifier (UFI) to each mixture in the format
  • “UFI:xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx”
  • e.g. product name, UFI, full formulation, toxicological information, label elements, Product Categorisation and package type and sizes
  • Addition of the UFI to the mixture label
  • Although the UFI is ‘supplemental information’ there is some flexibility regarding placement
